Client: University of the Free State
Location: University of the Free State Campus, Bloemfontein, Free State
Size: 5 500m²

The continually expanding student population of the Free State Campus created a need for more lecturing facilities. The building also addresses a call for up market facilities for the MBA department, resulting in a flag ship building which promotes the University’s image as a competing tertiary institution.

The identified site for the building used to serve as a parking area slotted between two other existing buildings: On the southern side the Flippie Groenewoudt is a linear type multi-storey lecturing building, and on the Northern side the Wynand Mouton is a prominent Theatre facility greeting visitors at the Northwestern entrance gate. This arrangement of existing buildings was addressed by filling the space in between with two long, narrow buildings, with a sunken auditorium facility which embraces the adjacent gathering area in front of the Wynand Mouton, without smothering it.
