The project brief was to create a safe and durable space for the youth and the community where they will receive support through various social and human development programmes. Designed to accommodate various indoor and outdoor sports and education activities a main axis link the largely pedestrian users of the township from the two fixed entry points on the site. This axis also acts as a division and link between the different building functions and allows for flexibility in the programme; where areas can be split and secured depending on the type and combination of events held. In order to fit into the surrounding informal settlement and bring down the buildings scale it’s mass is broken up by varying the heights of different functions and creating courtyards spaces around the building. This together with the use of face brick, metal and light weight polycarbonate cladding gives it a durable finish and ties it in with the surrounding environment.
